Episode 6 - An Army of Teddy Ruxpins

Technical difficulties be damned! Nothing can stop the LSCrew from talking about Avatar, the new James Cameron epic. The boys break it down (as best they can), discuss their likes and dislikes, the awe of riding structural landmarks, and wonder if in fact a robot would have any use for a knife. Plus, a listener writes in to drop some knowledge on the panel!

Episode 3 Preview

Well, it's almost the weekend and episode 2 isn't ready yet. Looks like the boys need to hire a new intern (don't tell DJ). Sure, we can blame the delay on the holiday weekend, but really, the second episode is just so good we're not sure if the public is ready for it yet. And once it is, it shall be unleashed upon you. That's just the LSCrew doing it's part.

But even that won't stop us from previewing episode 3. In honor of Ninja Assassin, the Crew discusses it and past Wachowski brothers flicks like Speed Racer.

And of course, since it's Friday a new episode of LSQ's 5-Minute Fridays appears below, and this time it's not just Hey Zeus all by his lonesome (thank god). Enjoy!

And look for episodes 2 and 3 to be released back-to-back sometime next week!

LSQ's 5-Minute Fridays, Nov. 27

A mini-cast from the boys at LSQ. This week they tackle Old Dogs, The Road, and Ninja Assassin to see which of these new releases you should check out.

The Doors (Not the Band)

I don’t know if everyone does this but I consider myself a gentleman. If regressed back to that fancy boring time of tea parties and laughing gaily at the queer jokes Mr. Sebastian VanPiffendower is making while the men jostle for dominance during a rousing game of Croquet, one thing is most assuredly clear. It will take less than 10 seconds to inadvertently insult someone, get challenged to a duel and then get ‘bested’ by Benjamin Sourbushpants because all I know about sword fighting is what I watched from Zorro. (Note: I find swinging my sword wildly while trying to run away in the opposite direction, while a legitimate strategy, will not win you duels)

No sir, I am not talking about that kind of gentleman; I am all 21st century man. So naturally, one of the only ways to show case my charm, whit and manners – besides on the podcast – is to attempt to hold the door open for not just women but men as well. I consider myself an equal opportunity kind of chap and make no distinctions between genders when manners are being tolled out. Now, I don’t mind if the person I am holding the door open for doesn’t thank me; it’s cool, I understand, sometimes that can lead to awkward situations. Maybe the guy that’s holding the door for you is a creep and you're with this new girl you like. You innocently say thank you and now this guy thinks you’re his new best friend and confesses that he tries to ‘enjoy’ a little boy per month but that the cops around the mall are getting stricter security lately so he’s not sure how long the ‘good times’ will last. Now your lady friend thinks the only reason this guys is talking to you about this is because he’s probably a good close friend of yours and she scrams. I get it, it’s a phobia, we all have them so don’t feel obligated to initiate any type of communication because odds are I’m right smack in the middle of having an episode over one of my phobias about you.

Like I said, I’m polite but it doesn’t mean I have to be friendly. What I think is messed up is when someone doesn’t respect the ‘door open’. I have things to do, I have places to go, and holding this door open eats about 2-4 seconds off of my life. That’s 2-4 seconds of my life that I’m slicing off of myself and then handing to someone on a silver platter with a smile. So maybe they could respect my choice to share my life with them. I hold the door open for this person today and instead of taking advantage of a completely open door, they turn to the door right next to it, open it and walk right through. - COMPLETELY IGNORING ME – I think by street rules that’s a disrespect that results in some caps being thrown out in to some asses. The person literally chose to exert more energy to step to the side, open the other door and walk through it then just take advantage of an easily accessible open one.

Luckily for that person, I’m a gentleman and I swallowed my words and let them continue on their way uninterrupted. Of course, I’m also not looking to get an ass pounding just because I was rude to someone while trying to be polite. Those kinds of oxymorons won’t get you anywhere. It’s about manners but it’s also about self preservation.
~Schwez

- We just got done taping Episode 2 and we are all now patiently waiting for HeyZeus to hack it to bits and pour it out for everyone to enjoy. I would love to speculate on when it will be released but its a well known fact that my technological savvy is lacking. I'm not on the Crew because of my intelligence, its my rugged good looks. Look for it to come out soon -

Episode 2 Preview

Now that episode 1 is finally online (sorry about the technical difficulties and be sure to check the "Show Notes" below), it's time to preview Episode 2!

Since we ran over with episode 1, we didn't have time to fit in each panel member's Top 5 favorite movies. Well, guess what? That's what the whole show will be about next week! What will make the cut? What won't? And more importantly, who will you agree with (hint: it's not Schwex!)

This Is It

Since we were unable to get to Michael Jackson's This Is It episode 1, I'm posting my thoughts here.

I grew up a Michael Jackson fan. I remember in my youth I owned a small, red plastic radio with the Thriller art emblazoned on it. Beat It was and continues to be my favorite MJ song, followed closely by Black or White. As an amateur music historian, I understand and promote Michael's influence in modern music in specific and pop culture in general. And I can say, with great authority, if you have ever seen one of Michael's videos or listened to his songs, owned his albums or tried (usually unsuccessfully) to Moonwalk, you'll be enthralled with this film.

The movie itself, while purporting to be a concert film, is actually somewhere between concert film and documentary. Made up of rehearsal footage shot days before the singer's untimely death, we were never supposed to see this. As you'll see when you watch This Is It, Michael Jackson was a perfectionist. Since this footage was of the rehearsals, it was never intended to be released. And that fact is what makes the film so engaging. You're getting an intimate view of one of the greatest performers of all time and his genius is on full display.

From his place on center stage, Michael is directing the music (provided live by a bevy of musicians on stage with him) and music cues, the lighting, the dancing, the video interstitials displayed on the giant screen behind him, everything. And it all works. The man knew how to entertain; he knew what his fans expected. And he was dedicated to making this, his final performance, his greatest. Over and over again he tells everyone involved in the production that however the song sounded on the records, that's how it should sound in the concert.

But it's not only the music that remains the same. Every song's video is performed, for the most part, live on stage. During Beat It, we get the knife fight. During The Way You Make Me Feel, Michael chases down a lovely ingenue, trying desperately to get her to notice him. And, the piece d'resistance, during Thriller we get backup dancers decked out in ghoulish garb, hands akimbo, traversing the stage while behind them on the screen an all new video is projected behind them, in full 3-D (that's right, 3-D).

There are a few disappointments, however, the singer's death and the subsequent canceling of the concert not-withstanding, though these disappointments are only evident during retrospection of the spectacle the audience is treated to. Not once is the moonwalk on full display (though you can spot the moment Michael expects to perform it during Billie Jean). The songs selected for the concert, while all hits, are not all the hits. A few notable exclusions: Bad (one of my favorite Michael songs, as well as dances), You Rock My World (and anything else post HIStory), Remember the Time, Heal the World, Will You Be There, and Scream. We are however, treated to three Jackson 5 selections (including I Want You Back).

During the rehearsals of each song, Michael is singing half-vocals and performing only parts of the dancing, saving himself for the concert itself. However, sometimes the man cannot keep the music inside him and indulges in soaring vocals and mesmerizing moves. And I will defy anyone who watches this to sit quietly still in their seat. One cannot help singing along or grooving in the theater.

Michael, of course, is the main focus of this film, though we do spend time with others involved in the production. In the opening minutes, we meet the touring dancers and view how they were selected (hand-picked by Michael himself). We meet the bombastic and beautiful lead guitarist, who perfectly executes Eddie Van Halen's solo on Beat It and Slash's riffs on Black or White. We briefly glimpse the wardrobe department creating Michael's new Billie Jean costume, replete with sparkling gems covering the jacket and lining the pants that would have illuminated (this as also another disappointment, as we never see the final product tested onstage). And we see Michael thrill to the testing of stage pyrotechnics.

Overall, this is one of the greatest movies I've seen yet this year, and urge anyone with even a mild interest in one of the most brilliant musicians in history to view this film. As the film draws to the end of it's 111 minutes, you ask yourself "this is it?' Because we want to see more of the man. Hear more of the music. And marvel at what truly would have been Michael's return to prominence with one of the greatest concerts ever performed.

Announcements

With post-production wrapping up on our first episode here in LSQ Studios, we have a couple of announcements:

Sadly, we lost some of the audio during our recording session, so the only item on our itinerary we got to was The Men Who Stare at Goats. However, that doesn't mean we were lacking in content. We're not going to give anything away, but try to figure out how we move from The Men Who Stare at Goats to Roseanne to Star Trek all the way through to Tim Burton's Batman! And we dare you not to laugh along.

Since you won't get to hear the panel's Top 5 favorite movies in this episode you can be damn sure that's what you'll get in Episode 2!

Be sure to subscribe to us in iTunes tomorrow by searching for "LSQ", and don't forget to also subscribe to our sistercast LSQ's 5-Minute Fridays, coming... well, Friday!

Peace!
