LSQ's Reboot Recast

It seems more and more Hollywood is remaking classic movies. Films as diverse as the James Bond films, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Ocean's 11, and The Taking of Pelham 123 have been treated to updates, as well as the current remake of The Wolfman and the upcoming remake of Robocop. In this spirit The LSQ Movie Review brings you Reboot Recast, where we do Hollywood's job for it (at least the easy part) and choose a new cast for a classic movie.

Here, we present you with the list of films we've Reboot Recasted on the show, along with who we chose to take over the new version. With each Reboot Recast you'll find the episode wherein that particular Reboot Recast originally aired. If you listen to the original broadcasts, you'll be treated to all the nay-saying and backstabbing that comes with the revelation of our casts.

Ghostbusters (1984)
Aired in: Episode 4 - I Almost Got Through It This Time

Original cast
Egon Spangler: Harold Ramis
Peter Venkman: Bill Murray
Ray Stanz:Dan Akroyd
Winston Zedmore: Ernie Hudson

When Schwez and Hey Zeus first came up with the idea for Reboot Recast while sitting around at LSQ Studios before The LSQ Movie Review was just a twinkle in their eye they test-drove the game with Ghostbusters.

Joe and Schwez worked together on their casts, of which they came up with two different versions: a comedy cast and an Academy Award cast. After much prompting by the Brothers Heiple, they whittled their duel casts into one.

Egon: Simon Pegg
Winston: Orlando Jones
Peter: Vince Vaughn
Ray: John C. Reilly

Cory didn't feel too strongly about his cast, but that didn't stop him from making some great choices.

Egon: Stephen Colbert
Winston: Craig Robinson
Peter: Jack Black
Ray: Kevin James

Hey Zeus went for a little more of a slapstick style of comedy with his cast, and pulled all of his actors from Judd Apatow movies, which also meant his cast was a little too young to be believable as the university scientists the original Ghostbusters were, but that's why Hollywood's got writers: to fix stuff like that.

Egon: Jay Baruchel
Winston: Romany Malco
Peter: Seann William Scott
Ray: Jonah Hill

Jaws (1975)
Aired in: Episode 11 - The British Used Kilobeans

Original cast
Sam Quint: Robert Shaw
Chief Martin Brody: Roy Scheider
Matt Hooper: Richard Dreyfuss

Cory was a little undecided this time around (even though it was his idea to Reboot Recast Jaws) and needed some help from the rest of the LSCrew to narrow his list down. Luckily, we were there to do his job for him, even going so far as to overlook the fact that he tried to sneak two alternatives for Quint (hoping we wouldn't notice. He is a flip-flopper, after all).

Quint: John Goodman
Brody: Will Smith
Hooper: Edward Norton

Joe was straightforward with his list and offered little explanation for his choices, except he couldn't come up with a Quint.

Brody: Johnny Depp
Hooper: Paul Giamatti

Schwez had to defend all of his cast to the rest of the LSCrew since he picked mostly comedic actors before he took a left turn with his choice for Quint.

Quint: Liam Neeson
Brody: Vince Vaughn
Hooper: Jack Black

Hey Zeus thought he had a strong cast, but the rest of the LSCrew were a little underwhelmed.

Quint: Russell Crowe
Brody: Denzel Washington
Hooper: Mark Ruffalo

Top Gun (1986)
Aired in: Episode 18 - That's a Lot of Testicles

Original cast
Maverick: Tom Cruise
Goose: Anthony Edwards
Iceman: Val Kilmer
Charlie: Kelly McGillis
Jester: Michael Ironside
Viper: Tom Skerritt
Carole: Meg Ryan
Merlin: Tim Robbins
Cougar: John Stockwell
Wolfman: Barry Tubb

Hey Zeus tried to stay true to the ages of the real cadets of the Top Gun academy, and impressed Schwez with at least one of his picks (it's not hard to guess which one).

Maverick: Chris Evans
Goose: John Krasinski
Iceman: Ryan Reynolds
Jester: Jason Isaacs
Charlie: Amber Heard

Joe had Transformers pop into his head while he was coming up with his list, which is reflected in his choices for the main roles. He did not, however, cast Starscream as the jet.

Maverick: Josh Duhamel
Goose: Tyrese Gibson
Iceman: Chris Evans
Charlie: Angelina Jolie

Cory skewed a lot younger for his cast than the rest of the LSCrew did for the main roles but the LSCrew signed off on most of his picks.

Maverick: Chris Pine
Goose: Shia LaBeouf
Iceman: Mike Vogel
Charlie: Rachel McAdams
Merlin: T.J. Miller
Jester: Bruce Willis

Schwez got to choose which movie to Reboot Recast and decided to recast almost every role in the movie (and even put Cory in it as an extra).

Maverick: Paul Rudd
Goose: Seth Rogen
Iceman: Ben Stiller
Cougar: Will Ferrell
Viper: William H. Macy
Jester: Steve Carell
Charlie: Kate Beckinsale/Kate Bosworth
Carole: Zooey Deschanel
Wolfman: Seann William Scott

Alien (1979)
Aired in: Episode 23 – W.W.H.L.D.W.H.Q.H.W.T.I.

Original cast
Ripley – Sigourney Weaver
Dallas – Tom Skerritt
Lambert - Veronica Cartwright
Ash - Ian Holm
Parker – Yaphet Kotto
Brett – Harry Dean Stanton
Kane – John Hurt

The LSCrew was able to be free with Alien since the character’s are more defined by their duties on the ship than anything else. Schwez was the most free as his cast is filled with comedians.

Kane: Jorma Taccone
Lambert: Kristen Wiig
Dallas: Bill Hader
Parker: Craig Robinson
Ripley: Andy Samberg
Brett: Justin Timberlake
Ash: Danny McBride

Joe thought he got extra credit for including three black actors in his cast but forgot that Hey Zeus and Cory put Denzel Washington and Will Smith (respectively) as Chief Brody in their Reboot Recast of Jaws..

Kane: Tom Hanks
Lambert: Jada Pinkett Smith
Dallas: Harrison Ford
Parker: Eddie Murphy
Ripley: Kate Beckinsale
Brett: Mackenzie Crook
Ash: Samuel L. Jackson

Cory got super defensive about his cast way before he had even revealed it and included two actors in specific roles as insults to Joe and Schwez.

Kane: Ryan Reynolds
Lambert: Scarlett Johansson
Dallas: John Goodman
Parker: Ving Rhames
Ripley: Angelina Jolie
Brett: Steve Buscemi
Ash: Sam Worthington

Hey Zeus went so far as to change the gender of Captain Dallas in his cast and, besides casting the same actor in the same role as Schwez did, followed suit with Cory and cast a former android in the role of Ash, the secret android in Alien.

Kane: Ethan Hawke
Lambert: Kat Dennings
Dallas: Demi Moore
Parker: Craig Robinson
Ripley: Malin Akerman
Brett: Michael Chiklis
Ash: Jude Law
